Dr. J. M. Toner, who was born in Pittsburg, Pa., in 1825, and died in Washington, in 1896, is well known as an earnest student of American History. He prepared this Index to Meade’s Old Churches and Families of Virginia for his own use, and the manuscript copy, in his handwriting, was found a few months since, on the occasion of removing the Library of Congress to its new quarters, in the valuable collection that he presented to the Government. He based his work on the issue of Meade of 1861, which varies in some slight respects from the first publication in 1857. …
