ODE TO A LONG WINTER, Spring Soltice, Where Are You?

Well, the daffies are a dillin’,

And the johnnies are aquillin’,

And the robins are singin’, their sweet song!

The bees, they are abuzzin’,

And I’m tellin’ you now, cousin,

Winter’s been here much too long!

Hearth fires, I’m tired of makin’,

Ash pits, I’m tired of shakin’,

And the the wood pile is gettin’ mighty low!

It’s the yard, I should be mowin’,

And veggies, I should be growing’,

Ol’ winter ought to pack it in and go!

My asparagus should be spearin’,

Another frost, I am fearin’.

If it comes, I know it’ll break my heart!

Tonight, they forecast freezin’,

They’ll keep on till I’m sneezin’.

Why won’t winter just load up and depart?

We made it through this season,

With flood, and drought, and freezin’,

And the calendar says it should be spring!

That ”weather man” is silly,

He’s forecast another dilly,

He’s determined to give winter one last fling!

If you think this little ditty,

Is great, or neat, or witty,

Then I must be outa my empty gourd!

Crossword puzzles have made me dizzy,

Writin’ this did keep me busy,

But I’m goin’ back to bed; I’m winter bored!

  1. Ray, have you ever thought about putting these witty poems to print and made into a coffee table book? I’m sure Amazon could sell millions of ’em. Keep up writing these words of witt and wisdom in country style that folks just can’t get enough of. We have enough bad stuff going on in our world these days and we need a bit of humor now and then. Thanks for keepin’ smiles on our faces. We love it.
