Ezra Jones Ware (1862 – 1950)

Ezra Jones Ware, born in May, 1862 in Butlerville, Ohio, was the second child of Emmor and Elizabeth Ware. When Ezra was young the family settled in Grand Rapids, MI. He attended Grand Rapids High School, and in 1888 graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.S. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Also in 1888 Ezra married Lizzie Fargo Hayden (1867-1937). By 1897 Ezra was a chemist with Parke, Davis & Co., a pharmaceutical company. He worked with that company in Detroit before moving to Kansas City, MO, where he and his family are listed in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 U.S. Censuses. As of the 1930 Census, when Ezra and wife “Lizzie” were both age 67, Ezra is listed as a “retired chemist.” Ezra and Lizzie Ware had three children: Elizabeth Ware (born 1892); Dora Edith Ware (born 1893); and Robert Hayden Ware, born 1900. The 1920 Census lists Robert and Dora living with their parents in Kansas City, with Robert, age 19, working as an accountant and Dora, age 26, as a science school teacher. After losing his wife in 1937, Ezra retired to Winter Park, Florida, where he is listed in the 1945 FL Census living alone at age 83. He later returned to Ann Arbor, MI to live with Dora’s family. He died in Ann Arbor around 1950. Ezra is buried in the Oak Hill cemetery in Grand Rapids.
