“Samuel Lewis Bates, 84, a retired farmer and life-long resident of this area, died at 10:40 p.m. Monday at his home on Ottumwa route 6.
The son of Edward and Julia Thompson Bates, he was born March 1, 1869, in a log cabin near his present home. He married Pearl Ware on March 26, 1890.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Florence Barrett, Dallas Center and Mrs. Irene Hathaway, West Des Moines; three sons, Alvin Bates, Dallas Center, and Lawrence F. and Cecil S. Bates, both of Ottumwa; 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Clara Thompson, San Diego, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, a brother, and a grandson.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Johnson funeral chapel, in charge of the Rev. W.B. Friend of the Pentecostal church. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery.”
