In January,1909, Mary was about 6 months pregnant when she died from burns she received while filling an oil lamp. She was standing at the fireplace replacing a lantern when she dropped it and oil spilled on her dress. She tried to wipe it off with the oil rag, which ignited catching her dress on fire. She was severely burned. Mary survived a little over a week and delivered prematurely during that time.The baby did not survive the night. Mary died a day after she gave birth.
