1860-1865: A.C. Ware served as captain for the “Nancy Harts”, a company of women whose formation to defend their town during the Civil War. He drilled, marched, and taught them marksmanship. The company was the brainchild of Nancy Hill Morgan. Several recruits were Poythress Gay, Augusta Hill, Mrs. Brown Morgan, Andelia Bull, Sarah Bull, Mrs.Peter Heard, Mrs.Moots, and Mrs Nancy Colquitt Hill-Morgan. These people were all related.
