Philip W. “Phil” Ware, age 103 years, a former resident of Chenoweth Creek and a current resident of Colonial Place, passed away Tuesday morning, December 1, 2015 at Colonial Place.

He was born April 18, 1912 at Harding, WV a son of the late Boon and Ethel Wilson Ware.

On June 7, 1947 at Oakland, MD he was married to Irene Nesbitt Ware who preceded him in death in October of 1980.

On October 7, 1981 at Elkins, he was married to Mildred “Millie” Goddin Ware who preceded him in death July 17, 2015.

He is survived by one daughter, Ellen Ware of Carolina Beach, NC, daughter-in-law Connie Caudy of Elkins, step daughters, Debbie Poe and husband Elmer of Washington, NC and Penny Lewandowski of Grand Rapids, MI.

Grandchildren, Christopher Martin, Eric Caudy and wife Anita, Michael Poe, Erica Poe, Michelle Poe and Ruby Brown and great grandchildren, Sarah, Abigail, Max, Lola, Carter and Coralee and many nieces and nephews in the Ware and Nesbitt families also survive.

Also preceding him in death was one son, David B. Caudy and three brothers, Leonard “Bub”, Virgil, and WC “Dock” Ware.

He was a graduate of Elkins High School and was a Veteran of the United States Army during World War II where he obtained the rank of Sargent.

He served as Sheriff of Randolph County for three terms and later worked at Mountaineer Motors in Elkins prior to his retirement.

He was selected as an Outstanding Civic Leader of America, was a member of Elkins Lodge No. 108 AF & AM, Tygart Valley Shrine Club, B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 1135 where he was Exalted Ruler 1963-1964, past President of the Elkins Kiwanis Club and a Charter Member of the Elkins Jaycees.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elkins where he was very active in many capacities of the church including the Methodist Men.

Friends may call from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm Saturday, December 5, 2015 at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley officiating.

Interment will follow in the Maplewood Cemetery.

Presentation of the American Flag will be made at the gravesite by members of The West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program and Elkins Lodge No 108 AF & AM will conduct Masonic graveside rites.

Memorials may best be made by carrying on Mr. Ware’s lifetime of community service with the organization of your choice in his memory.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 1645 W. 8th St., Erie, PA, 16505, First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerens Ave., Elkins, WV 26241 or to a charity of choice.
