CARLTON HAMES WARE, age 75, of Little Rock, died peacefully Sept. 5, 2018. He was born Aug. 20, 1943 in Pine Bluff, Ark.

Hames graduated from Henderson State University and received a Master’s Degree in Speech and Communication from the University of Arkansas – Fayetteville. He taught school for several years in Pine Bluff. Hames then worked as Education Coordinator for Youth Home Inc., where he took great pleasure in helping the students to be more successful in school. For many years, Hames worked doing radio and television voice-overs, for both local and national audiences, specializing in character voices. In 2012, Hames retired from Central Arkansas Library System, where he trained and mentored many Pages over the years. Hames was recognized nationally as an authority on comic book art and artists. He co-edited the Who’s Who of American Comic Books and contributed to countless other publications. Shortly before his death, he donated his extensive archive to the Comics Collection in Columbia University’s Rare Book and Manuscript Library, where it will be available for research to the global community of scholars.

Hames was an extremely loyal friend and maintained many lifelong friendships. He was a prolific correspondent and was always solicitous of others, eager to help. An avid learner, he immersed himself in whatever subject he became interested in. Hames always maintained his optimistic outlook and sense of wonder, particularly of the natural world. His sense of humor and storytelling gift brought joy to all who knew him. He was a member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marjorie Frances (Hames) Ware and Carlton Victor Ware Jr., and his brother, Allan Robert Ware.

He is survived by his sister, Lynne Clifton.

There will be a service for Hames at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 12415 Cantrell Road, Little Rock, Ark. 72223 at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018, followed by a reception.
