“A funny looking hat that attracts attention and a knowledge of current events are all one needs to sell candy, cigarets, oranges, and the like to the public, according to Charles W. Wares. His rotund figure has been a familiar one at all business places from Southwest Blvd to Twenty-sixth for the last few years.
“Ware travels from place to place in a 1925 Oldsmobile. He has no trouble selling his stock and often has to refill his box and basket several times day.
“Ware has two hats, one for cool weather and one for warm weather. He now is wearing what he calls his ‘airflow hat’. In warmer weather he changes to one that greatly resembles a dog muzzle.
” “People get curious and start a conversation,” he said athe Journal -Post Tuesday. “The sales follow. Eighty percent of the time, I don’t even ask them to buy anything. They just buy. You sell your self, not the goods. These hats of mine are my personality. Without them I would not do so good. The bring the attention, then comes the conversation and the sales.”
