I am the descendant of Dr. James Agnew Ware. My mother was Dorothy Abernethy Snowder. I understand that, during the Civil War, Dr. Ware was tortured by northern soldiers wanting him to tell them where his gold was buried on his plantation. He died soon after. The plantation was located in Toxish Co., Mississippi.

My branch of the Abernethy family took the train west to McAlester, Oklahoma where they owned a general store called the Star. Felix Monroe Abernethy and his wife, Mattie Ware Abernethy, are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in McAlester.
