Marian Snyder Ware Obituary, 2008


Marian Snyder Ware, 91, of Strasburg, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2008 at the home of her daughter following a long illness. Her husband, the late Congressman John H. Ware 3rd preceded her in death. Previously, Congressman and Mrs. Ware spent over 55 years of their married lives as residents of Oxford, Pa. She was born in Titusville, Pa. and was one of three daughters of Dr. C. Paul Snyder and his wife Adelaide who resided in Lansdowne and Philadelphia, Pa.

Mrs. Ware was widely known as a philanthropist and activist who supported a wide variety of charities, including a number of initiatives which supported the advancements of women’s causes, medical and scientific research in diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease, and charities which provided services for people with special needs. Unbeknownst to anyone, Mrs. Ware encouraged and supported the education of dozens of young women who advanced to become nurses aides, nurses and physicians. She was a strong advocate and supporter of effective farmland preservation in both Lancaster and Chester Counties and of the preservation of endangered species. She maintained a lifelong interest in both Boy and Girl Scouts, having served as both a den mother and senior Girl Scout leader. She was active in supporting her alma mater, Swarthmore College, where she was a swimmer and hockey player.

Mrs. Ware was an adventurous traveler who went on two safaris in Africa, rafted down the Colorado River and toured throughout Europe. She was a member of the Oxford Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Ware was surrounded by her children and grandchildren in the last days of her life. She is survived by her four children: John H. Ware IV of Oxford; Ambassador Marilyn Ware of Strasburg; Paul W. Ware of Lancaster, married to Judy Schoenly Ware; and Carol Ware Gates of Christiana. Her other descendants include twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held in the spring.
