"James Edwin Martin, 85, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 
2003, at his home. A native of Hammond, he earned 
degrees from John Hopkins University and Louisiana 
State University. He was a professor at Southeastern
University from 1947 to 1981. He is survived by his
wife, Mattie Lou Ware Martin of Hammond; one son, 
James Edward Martin of Hammond; one brother, Alfonse
C. Martin of Jackson; and two half- sisters, Billie
Jo Burchfield of Texas and Willine Martin of Mississippi.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Ester 
and Mellie Lee Alford Martin; one brother, Johnny
Martin; and one sister, Dixie Martin. Visitation will 
be Thursday at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Hammond, 
from 11 a.m. until the funeral at 2 p.m. Burial will be 
in Ponchatoula Cemetery."
