“MUNCIE–Herbert E. Ware, M.D., 76, well known Muncie physician, passed away Wednesday afternoon, August 15, 2007, at Ball Memorial Hospital, following an extended illness.
He was born Feb. 24, 1931 to Thornton E. and Evelyn L. Ware in Ann Arbor, MI, and later moved with his family to nearby Dexter, where he graduated from high school in 1948.
Educated at the University of Colorado and the University of Michigan, School of Medicine, he joined the Muncie practice of Dr. O.A. Hall and Dr. Robert S. Hall in 1957. Over the next decade, he practiced medicine with a series of Muncie physicians, including Arthur Rettig, M.D., George David, M.D., Stewart Gray, M.D., and George Polcz, M.D. Dr. Ware maintained a solo private practice from 1968 until 1988, and served as Medical Director for General Motors in Muncie until 1995.
Dr. Ware was an instructor and Associate Director in the Family Practice Residency Program at Ball Memorial Hospital, where he also served as Chief of Staff for one year in the early 1970’s. He was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice in 1992.
A longtime golfer and pilot, Dr. Ware owned and flew antique aircraft, including a rare 1935 Davis, one of only 50 made in Richmond, IN. Fly fishing in Florida, Michigan, or in the Rockies was another longtime hobby. He also enjoyed jazz music, having once studied to become a jazz pianist.
Among his many affiliations are the Riverside United Methodist Church; the American Academy of Family Practice; Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association; Experimental Aircraft Association; and Phi Chi Fraternity. He was a longtime supporter of the St. Labre Indian School for the Northern Cheyenne in Ashland, Montana.
Surviving are his wife of 23 years, JoAnn Ware; one daugher, Katherine J. Ware, Muncie; one stepson, Charles V. Amos (fiancee-Gina Beeles), Muncie; one brother, Robert E. Ware, Dexter, MI; two nieces; two nephews; and many, many dear friends and colleagues.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Susan E. Ware; and a sister-in-law, Halli Ware.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 18, 2007 at 3 p.m. in The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, with Pastor Karen Powell of Riverside United Methodist Church, officiating. Friends may call at the mortuary from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday or prior to services on Saturday.
