Mary Stack Ware, 89, philanthropist and longtime civic leader died Tuesday, August 16, 2011.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 18, 2011, at Polk Street United Methodist Church with Dr. W. Winfred Moore, Pastor Emeritus, First Baptist Church and Dr. Burt Palmer, Senior Pastor, officiating. Private burial will be at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Mary was born in Van Buren, Arkansas. Her family moved to Amarillo, where she attended public school, graduating from Amarillo High School in 1939. She was elected the first Queen of Amarillo High School, and graduated from Amarillo College. She then attended the University of Texas and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta.

She was very proud of being elected to the Amarillo High School Sandie Hall of Fame in 2007, and being named the 2006 Amarillo College Distinguished Alumna.

Her philanthropy activities were centered in Amarillo College, where she endowed a Scholarship in her name, BSA Hospital, and Park Central where the Mary Ware Clock Tower is named for her.

Mary served on the Potter-Randall Citizens Committee that did the original planning of the Medical Center. She also served as a Board Member of the United Way, Kid’s Inc., The Art Alliance, Amarillo Symphony Guild, the Amarillo Art Center, Texas Panhandle Mental Health Mental Retardation for many years and the Amarillo Day Nursery.

Mary was very active in the Junior League, Junior Women’s Club and in the Amarillo Garden Center before it became the Amarillo Botanical Gardens. She was the first President of the Amarillo Banker’s Wives Association.

She was a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church and the Susanna Wesley Sunday School class.

Mary is survived by her husband of 67 years, Tol Ware; and sons, Richard, and Bill and his wife Paige, all of Amarillo; six grandchildren, Anne-Clayton Ware of Dallas, Benj Ware, Pat Ware, William Ware, W. Tol Ware and Savannah Ware Singleton, all of Amarillo; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Virginia Thornton of Amarillo.

The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a favorite charity.
