Josiah Wm. Ware (1849)

At a meeting of the directors of the Berryville turnpike company! at T. Smith’s office in Berryville, this 29lh day of September 1S49:

The directors of the Berryville turnpike company report to the Board of public works, that they have found it necessary to make one track of macadam limestone road, nine feet wide and seven and a half inches thick, on the whole of the grade between Abram’s creek and Winchester, that has not. heretofore been macadamized, and have contracted with John Manning and others to put the metal on, at 75 to 80 cts. per perch, which, owing to the distance of transportation, is the least that they could have it done for. The work is now progressing and the board hope to have the greater part of it accomplished before the winter sets in, and will necessarily have to contract a debt on the new stock account to meet that expense, as the funds arising from the capital and other sources, (except the tolls,) arc entirely exhausted.

The directors refer the Board of public works to the annual account of the treasurer which is hereto annexed, for the receipts and expenditures within the year ending the 30th September, 1S49, which they have examined and believe to be correct.

A list of the stockholders on the 30th September, 1849, with the number of shares standing in each name, is also hereto annexed.

With regard to the length of the improvement, number of toll-gates, compensation to gate-keepers, and the arrangement for keeping the road in repair, the directors refer the Board of public works to their report made the 30th September 1S47, as they arc particularly mentioned, and still adhered to, as laid down in that report, except allowing one of the gate-keepers at Berryville twelve dollars a year more than the other two, in consequence of paying his own house rent, the company having no house at that gate.

The directors have this day declared a dividend on the old stock, of $ 1 45 on each share of stock, and have nothing further to report.
