A Brief Sketch of the Life of Hyrum Smith King

I, Hyrum Smith King, was the eldest son of Enoch Marvin and Mary Bigg Ware, King. I was born on Oct. 7, l844 in Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois. I came across the plains with my parents, in Oct. 1849, being about five years of age. We crossed the plains with ox-carts, in the company of William Hyde. All that I can remember of the journey, was coming down over the Little Mountain, which is just east of Salt Lake City, Utah. The first company left Nauvoo in 1847. But the Mormons were ordered out of there in the spring of 1849, this being when we left. We were about six months making the journey from there to Salt Lake City. We lived in Salt Lake about five years. Then we moved to Kaysville, now known as East Layton, in the year 1854. The family lived in a wagon during the winter. We built a log house the next year. On account of Johnson’s Army coming to Utah in 1858, we were compelled to leave our homes and move South to Sanpete County. But we returned the same fall to gather our crops. We lived in Kaysville until 1859, when I joined the Utah Militia. I served under Colonel Robert T. Burton of Salt Lake, in the Marrisite War of 1862. I made a trip to Boise, Idaho, in 1863 with my father and five other men. It was a distance of about 500 miles, and we made the entire trip with a team. I was married Jan. 1, 1864 to Alice Bennett. We were married at Kaysville. On July 4, 1866, I was called to Sanpete County, Utah to serve in the Black Hawk War. I served there three months, returning to Kaysville I lived there until 1881, then moved to South Hooper, now called West Point. I was Ward Teacher there from 1881 to 1886. I was also chosen First Counselor in the Elders Quorum in 1882 and served until 1886. In 1886 I was chosen Superintendent of the Sunday School and acted until 1889. I was First Assistant Superintendent of the Sunday School from 1889 to 1893. I was Bishop Second Counselor, from June 12, 1898 until 1910. At this time, April 23, 1928, I am a member of the North Davis High Priest Quorum. My wife died on June 21, 1910. Since that time I have lived with my youngest daughter, Olive, except at times, when I have spent a few weeks with my other children. I have 6 sons and 6 daughters, nine of them are still living, and have families of there own. I am still a firm believer in the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints, and do all I can for its progress. I have 70 grand-children, 60 living. I have 86 great grandchildren, 69 living.
