James Ware Cobbs Obituary, 2017

James Ware Cobbs April 26, 1922-May 19, 2017James Ware Cobbs, 95, died peacefully at his home in Greenwich, CT, on Friday, May 19, 2017. Mr. Cobbs was born on April 26, 1922, in Washington DC. He graduated from Woodberry Forest School and Princeton University where he trained with horse drawn artillery in the ROTC. He served as an Army Captain in the field artillery in World War II. He was a born salesman starting as a high school student selling women’s hosiery. He worked for Women’s Day in advertising sales, Bates Fabrics, and then Time Inc. for various publications. He served as president of the Greenwich Community Chest (later United Way), The Stanwich Club, and the Greenwich Land Trust. He was a member of the Belle Haven Club, the South Conway Club, the Musketeers Golfing Group, and the Round Hill Community Church. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Martha McCully Cobbs, his sister Betty C. Brown of Greenwich, his children Elizabeth L. Cobbs (Philip Green) of Washington DC, James W. Cobbs Jr. (Jill Stauffer Cobbs) of Greenwich, and Martha M. Cobbs (Dennis Sullivan) of Eaton, NH., as well as 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents John Lewis Cobbs Jr. and Jessie Ware Cobbs, and his older brother John Lewis Cobbs III. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Upper Saco Valley Land Trust, 2686 White Mountain Highway, North Conway, NH 03860, would be welcome.
