Second attachment. And for confusing contrast, here is the Alonzo Shelton Ware that died in Madison, Alabama in 1914. He was a bachelor and the tax assessor there up until his death. Since they had brothers with similar initials, I ran down all the siblings’ obits until I could differentiate the families. Likely a shared grandfather but I did not make the effort to confirm that. Just to differentiate these two contemporaries.

What made it confusing were he had brothers of same name, similar vital dates, as well as brothers with the same initials. I didn’t get them sorted until I ran down obits for all the the children.

Here is the obit for our guy. The obit for the other one is 1914 in newspapers.com.

Alonzo Shelton Ware and Alonzo Shelton Ware – The Problem with People named the same and residing in the same State — 1 Comment

  1. I’m compiling information about my great-grandfather Andrew Hardiman Ware (1881-1955). Born in Georgia and moved to Alabama City (Gadsden), he was a minor league baseball pitcher in several cities including Houston in 1915.

A missing piece of his history was in McKinney in January 1916. It appears he was there to coach the Texas Cotton Mill team, but his 10 month old daughter died of pneumonia on January 18, 1916. Both the McKinney newspaper and death certificate state she was buried at Pecan Grove. Unfortunately, they have no record of a gravestone for her.

So far, I’ve found no record of a baseball team in McKinney or of Andy’s (aka Hardy) arrival in or departure from McKinney. Perhaps the team or league never formed or Andy went back to playing as he went on to the Rock Island Islanders and to the Los Angeles Angels before becoming an umpire.

Is there anyone who has expertise in Collin County baseball in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries who may have the story of baseball in McKinney in 1915-1916?
